![]() ![]() Schools in Princeton, New Jersey, began implementing one homework-free weekend each semester in 2015, in part to give students more time to pursue interests and passions outside of school. The main reason for the break, though, is that college priority and early admissions deadlines for many top colleges in the region occur in the fall. It allows over-stressed kids to catch up with other responsibilities-or simply take a breather. In states such as Maryland, several schools have designated homework-free weekend periods this fall. And it’s a great time to land a seasonal job and make some extra money at the end of the year. It’s also the countdown to college admissions due dates. In some schools, though, that’s becoming the norm rather than the exception-at least on specially designated weekends. “Those study skills, those work habits (that) they develop by doing their homework will help them succeed throughout their lives,” Erdelyi says.“No homework tonight!” From time to time, some teachers surprise their students with that announcement at the closing bell of class. Steven Erdelyi, head of Solomon Schechter Academy in Montreal, says it’s important for students to spend time at home reviewing what they learned. Not everyone agrees that it’s the right choice. It’s up to individual teachers and schools to decide whether to ban homework. “There is not a lot of evidence it does anything positive,” he says. ![]() McGill University professor Steven Shaw agrees that homework is a major cause of fights between parents and children. Some research has shown that homework has little or no academic benefit for children up to sixth grade, and it’s a notorious source of stress. ![]() There have been homework bans in schools from Barrie, Ont., to Saguenay, Que. ![]() “We want students to be at home being with their (families), being with their friends, playing and being children,” he says.Įlizabeth Ballantyne isn’t the first school to do away with homework. School principal Michael Brown says students shouldn’t spend six hours working at school and then be expected to do two more hours of work at home.
